James M. Stanton said in a recent meeting with the clergy that we
recognize the growing influence of the Spanish speaking people in
our Diocese.
The Bishop, the Canon to the Ordinary and the Dean of the Cathedral
have joined forces with the Hispanic leadership of the Diocese to
promote leadership development in this diocese.
It has long been a goal of the Spanish leaders, priests and deacons
to have a training school where the Spanish people could advance
in their theological training and leadership skills. With the Spanish-speaking
part of the population of Dallas growing rapidly, now is past time
to start such a school.
The Rev. Tony Muñoz, Canon for Hispanic Ministry at the Cathedral,
has taken the challenge to start the Instituto Teológico
San Mateo with the encouragement of the other Spanish congregations
in the diocese.
Our goal is to have Spanish-speaking people who are well prepared
theoretically and practically, who love God with their whole heart,
soul and mind and who love their neighbors as themselves, who will
become the next generation of Hispanic ministers.
The first classes were held at St. Matthew's Cathedral on Feb. 17
and 19 from 7-10 p.m. The first semester classes will be held every
Tuesday and Thursday evening for 16 weeks, through the first week
of June.
Second semester classes are scheduled to start August 17 and will
run through Dec. 2.
The first class of students come from four churches in Dallas and
one in Fort Worth. They are 10 very serious, deeply-committed students
who bring a lot of enthusiasm and desire to learn to the classes.
This first semester they are studying the Prayer Book, Introduction
to Christian Education, Introduction to the Bible and Personal Evangelism.
Some of these students will become the leading Christian Educators
in their home churches and others will go on to seek ordination
to the Diaconate.
